Our Doctors

Program Director

Joseph Odin, M.D.
Dr. Joseph Odin is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Liver Diseases and director of The New York Autoimmune Liver Disease Treatment Program at Mount Sinai.

His primary clinical interest is in treating patients with autoimmune liver diseases, including primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and autoimmune hepatitis, as well as those with hepatitis C infection (HCV).

Co-Director

Nancy Bach, M.D.
Dr. Nancy Bach, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Liver Diseases, began her study of liver disease with a particular interest in autoimmune liver diseases. She was fortunate, she says, in having completed her fellowship training in liver diseases at Mount Sinai under the mentorship of some of the greatest liver specialists and pathologists of all time. Dr. Bach also holds the distinction of having worked with the Mount Sinai team that performed the first liver transplant in the State of New York in 1988.

Autoimmune Liver Disease Team Physicians

Drs. Odin and Back work closely with a wide-variety of specialists to provide comprehensive care for all health needs related to autoimmune liver diseases.

Richard Haber, M.D.
Dr. Haber is a highly respected endocrinologist who is Director of the Mount Sinai Bone Mineral Density Program. Our many patients with autoimmune liver disease and osteoporosis, as well as those with autoimmune thyroid conditions, are expertly managed by Dr. Haber.

Peter Gorevic, M.D.
Dr. Gorevic is Chief of Rheumatology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center and a national expert in the treatment of systemic autoimmune disease and arthritis related to liver disease. Since many individuals with autoimmune liver disease suffer from associated rheumatoid arthritis and other systemic autoimmune diseases, Dr. Gorevic's expertise is frequently called upon.

M. Isabel Fiel, M.D.
Dr. Fiel is an internationally recognized expert on liver pathology who has published and spoken widely on autoimmune liver disease. She also serves as co-director of pathology for the international STOPSC Foundation, which is dedicated to enhancing our knowledge of the causes of primary sclerosing cholangitis. This knowledge is valuable in developing effective treatments for PSC.

Swan Thung, M.D.
Dr. Thung is a world-renowned liver pathologist. She studied under Dr. Hans Popper, co-founder of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, who is considered the Father of Modern Hepatology.
Dr. Thung, like her mentor, is frequently invited to speak on autoimmune liver disease at prestigious international conferences. She also frequently serves as editor for issues of Seminars in Liver Disease, the most widely read hepatology journal dedicated to autoimmune liver disease.

Stephanie Factor, M.D., M.P.H.
A Johns Hopkins-trained physician, Dr. Factor is an expert in epidemiology and is director of the Mount Sinai Medical School's course in Epidemiology. Her expertise is quite important in analyzing whether pollution exposure plays a significant role in progression of autoimmune liver disease.
